Yes, it is easy to start an Etsy. But will it make you any money?
…
This was the first question I asked myself when I was starting my crochet business. Two years ago, I had an epiphany. I would crochet things and sell them on Etsy. After five months of advertising, I had one organic sale.
So, for me, no. That was not a great moneymaking plan.
Luckily, early on in my business venture, I had an entrepreneur friend who pointed me towards markets.
I was scared to try. I had been trying to spend as little as possible to get my gig up and running. I thought it would be a ton of work to create an entire inventory and display. All this without the security of knowing whether I would make money. You could’ve considered me highly risk averse.
And of course, there is a risk to this, as there is with any business. In fact, at my very first market, I made nothing. I had zero sales.
That stung a little, but I hadn’t tried everything yet. So I didn’t let it get me down for long, and I’m sooo glad I didn’t. I kept my eyes open, noticing everyone else’s displays and product lines, and I kept thinking. I went home and made a few different things. I tried them out at my second market, and I had about $80 in sales that time. I went back to the drawing board again, and guess what my sales were at my third market?
$362.
And THAT was the taste I needed. That was not luck. That was hard work. That was evidence that this was going to work.
Oh, and I tested almost FIFTY different products before I refined my product line to something that consistently sold well (we’re talking a few hundred bucks per market).
